 2017 Preview

Houston Academy finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Houston Academy finished eighth in Class 3A region two with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Raiders lost as many games as in any season since 1981. The defense allowed a team record 394 points last season.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Houston Academy averaged scoring just 10.1 points a game. The Raiders also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 39.4 points a game.

Since 2010, Houston Academy has gone a combined 36-34. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 28th in Class 3A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Houston Academy has managed to compile a record of 153-114. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 3A and 110th in the AHSAA.

The Raiders are led by head coach Jim Addison who is entering his eleventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 60-42 over the past ten seasons at Houston Academy. Under his direction the Raiders have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times. They have won one region crown with Coach Addison.

Coach Addison's overall record as a head football coach in nineteen season stands at 105-86 (55.0%). His 105 wins rank 10th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Addison's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times and won four region championships.

The Houston Academy Raiders will play in Class 3A region two during the 2017 season.

The Raiders enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 9 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

This season, the Raiders will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two.

The Raiders open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Geneva County on Friday, August 25 at Dixie Howell Stadium. Last year the Geneva County Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 2A region two. The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a loss to Slocomb by a score of 28-6.

Houston Academy and Geneva County have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Raiders have a 8-4-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2016 with Houston Academy winning by a score of 28-19.

Houston Academy returns 3A All-State Junior punter Henry Beckett. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
